Trees & Shrubs

In an Open Woodland, such as our Wildflower Walk at Vale Park, the taller trees form a canopy overhead which is not only important for our wildlife, but also partly shades and mulches around the ground layer plants.

Our shrubs are also important as they also provide excellent shelter and food sources for  wildlife, including birds and butterflies.

N.B. As a rule of thumb in a woodland, for every tree there is 10 shrubs and 100 understorey plants (or 10 understorey plants for each shrub).
