A Friendly Day at Gilberton

It was a very friendly, productive community morning  at Gilberton Woodland on Friday 17th October 2014 …

Apart from regulars Cathryn, Margaret, and Heather; Marianne was able to come and  Xanthe (2 y.o.) came with grandma Lesley, who has just returned from overseas. Marianne brought everyone some yummy “morta bots” (I have no idea of the correct spelling!) from the Central Market for morning tea.

Nearby neighbours Ron and Carol dropped in  to see the  flowering King Spider Orchid’s Heather brought to show, and Carol showed us photos of very rare White Spider Orchids they had seen on Yorke Peninsula! Very friendly, and we got some valuable feedback re the site.  Carol is just amazed how quickly and how far the Pink Fairies have spread (as we all are!) and was glad to have seen the King Spider and Purple Cockatoo flowers this year on site.

We were lucky enough to be there when the lovely Long Purple Flag Iris was flowering.  This is a new species to Gilberton, planted at the start of August this year, that has obviously appreciated the regular water given it by Cathryn, Margaret and Michelle.

The whole plant can be seen in the photo of Xanthe below.

With the warmer weather the very large number of Pink Fairies orchid seed pods (Caladenia latifolia) are beginning to split vertically and the tiny dust-like seeds blown around Gilberton and beyond. Yay!

We moved a few of the dried pods and blew the seed into the areas we had specially cleared nearby in the Woodland and beside the bikeway.

Xanthe helped us blow the seeds around! Notice the Long Purple Flag in the foreground.
